Senior Producer, The Seattle Times Company's NWsource, August 2006 - Present
Responsible for making NWsource the place to learn how to spend your time and money in Seattle.
  • Lead a large and varied team of engineers, designers, and producers to build the site.
  • Directly manage a team of two producers.
  • Drove the change to a new open source content management system.
Manager, New Media Development, Seattle Weekly, August 2004 - August 2006
An "army of one" for Seattle's leading alternative weekly newspaper.
  • Involved in every aspect of the site, from planning, to programming, to content, to design, to revenue creation.
  • Completed a full redesign in-house, including a custom-built content management system, listings database, and site design.
  • Tripled the traffic to the site within a year and a half of my date of hire.
Technical Manager, ABC-Owned Affiliates, June 2000 - August 2004
Led a team of 3 producers, a software engineer and a designer in building and maintaining sites for the 10 ABC-owned television stations, including the top 5 markets.
  • Grew the sites to reach over 3 million readers, and over 40 million pageviews a month.
  • Organized a top-to-bottom site redesign and backend re-architecture, resulting in a ten-fold decrease in site maintenance, while increasing pageviews and ad revenue opportunities.
  • Coordinated content sharing during national breaking news events.
  • Promoted from Technical Producer in 2001, based on leadership within the group and knowledge of the medium.
Senior Web Specialist, The Denver Rocky Mountain News, December 1999 - May 2000
Lead producer within the newspaper's new media division.
  • A central figure in an aggressive redesign of the site, to be used as a model for all other E.W. Scripps sites
  • Worked with producers to build and update breaking news packages.
  • Acted as a mentor to other web specialists.
Web Specialist, Daily Camera, April 1998 - December 1999
Responsible for the technology/design of The Daily Camera's web site and its sister sites.
  • Drove the redesign/rethinking of the site, which resulted in a traffic jump of 12 times its original size within one year.
  • Worked with reporters, editors, and photographers to create news packages, including an EPpy-winning Columbine special section.
  • Responsible for updating the site with the day’s news 3 nights a week.
Internet Producer, E.W. Scripps Corp, September 1997 - April 1998
Worked on a project-by-project basis for various E.W. Scripps newspapers.
  • Produced a Winter Olympics site with nightly updates and online-only content.
  • Helped redesign the site for the Rocky Mountain News, resulting in an EPpy nomination for best design.

EDUCATION

A graduate of The Evergreen State College, with a liberal arts degree and an emphasis in new media journalism.

ACADEMIC PROJECTS
  • Researched online newspapers using the metaphor of "virtual libraries" containing archived community information, meeting centers, and pre-history.
  • Created Internet sites for various nonprofit groups, such as the Community Networking Movement and the Wallingford neighborhood.
  • Developed models for 6 different writing structures that take advantage of the internet's ability to layer information.
