Tragedy at Columbine

http://www.thedailycamera.com/shooting

I worked alongside the news room to accurately and sympathetically cover the Columbine Shootings. A team of reporters, photographers, internet producers, and I worked around the clock to provide coverage of this story to a national audience.

HISTORY
Less than a half an hour after the first shot was fired at Columbine reporters, police, and frightened parents were beginning to gather outside of the school. In the same amount of time we had begun our coverage of this tragedy and didn't stop our round-the-clock updates until a week later.

Due to a relationship that we had formed with the newsroom, they provided us with breaking news and extended coverage throughout week. It was our job to provide it to a national audience who had already been burned with hurried misinformation from many television outfits. We were quick to help people understand the tragedy by providing floor plans of the school, audio of the 911 calls, and time lines of the happenings.

However, we knew that understanding the tragedy was just one step in the healing process. We helped people grieve for the victims by providing online memorials, we helped them talk about their fears with an online discussion with a counselor, and allowed them to help by giving them charities to donate to.

All of this work was recognized nationally with mentions from most all national news outlets and an EPpy award from the Editor and Publisher magazine.
